ABSTRACT

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has been drawing the world's attention for more than half a century now. It is a protracted and multifaceted conflict. It seems to be symptomatic that the beginning of the conflict's history is already in dispute. Although the conflict can be traced back at least to the early nineteenth century, especially in the first half of the twentieth century the tensions between Arabs and Jews increased. In the second half of the century the tensions turned into a constant struggle between them. A vicious cycle of violence and counter-violence began which never really ceased; instead, it repeatedly culminated in dramatic escalations. The focus of the following chapters will be mainly set upon violence that occurred during the latest conflict period, the second intifada (also called Al Aqsa intifada 2 ) which erupted in September 2000.
