ABSTRACT
The States that have ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) elect the 18 members of the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child. Committee members act as independent individuals – not representatives of their countries – and are nominated for election on the basis of expertise in respect of children’s issues. All the committee’s members are adults. This has attracted criticism from children’s rights activists in recent years, and there is mounting pressure from children in England and elsewhere for the committee – at least – to establish an international children’s advisory group.
