ABSTRACT

Reference was made in Chapter 1 to the passing of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act (PACE) 1984 and its effect on policing since the mid-1980s. This Act of Parliament created a whole new set of rules for the police service in respect of the treatment of people who come into contact with the police. Perhaps the most significant area of policing affected by PACE is the detention, treatment and welfare of people who have been arrested and taken to a police station. PACE is accompanied by the Codes of Practice, a set of rules which give guidance to the police as to how PACE should be implemented by police officers.
