Earlier chapters identified the origins, backgrounds and career paths of current Governors, described their motivation for doing the job and the ideologies which influence the way they do their work (Chapter 5), emphasised work elements common to Governors as a group and the uniqueness of each Governor and environment (Chapter 6). During the research it became apparent that groups of Governors shared common beliefs, ways of operating, and approaches to prison governance – what Reiner refers to as ‘distinctive constellations . . . that can be seen as variations around central themes’ (Reiner 1991: 303).
