ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses different laboratory tests that occur in certain clinical situations. Antinuclear antibodies including antimitochondrial antibodies are determined for investigating abnormal liver function. Erythrocyte sedimentation rate/C-reactive protein are determined for suspected irritable bowel syndrome. Thyroid function test (hypo- or hyperthyroidism) is performed for polymyalgia rheumatic condition. Anticardiolipin antibodies (antiphospholipid syndrome) are determined for investigating recurrent miscarriages. Twenty-four-hour urine cortisol is monitored for investigating the Hirsutism condition. Faecal occult blood is examined for unexplained weight loss. Urea and electrolytes are investigated for determining hypertension. High sodium may suggest primary aldosteronism, and low potassium may suggest primary or secondary aldosteronism; hypokalaemia, and hypernatraemia in Conn’s syndrome.
