ABSTRACT

Much has been written on off-road driving and its effects on beaches and dunes (Godfrey and Godfrey, 1980; Buckley 2004; Davenport and Davenport, 2006). Particular impacts on beach fauna (Schlacher and Thompson, 2007), turtle nesting (Hosier et al, 1981), bird nesting (Watson, 1992) and dune vegetation (Rickard et al, 1994) have been documented, as well as general noise and disturbance (McKenna et al, 2000). Rather less has been written on the means of control of such vehicles (for example Rosenberg, 1976 McConnell, 1977). The most extreme form of control is a blanket ban similar to that recently introduced in South Africa (Celliers et al, 2004), while other approaches include licensing and control of access.
