ABSTRACT

Ideally, water pollution should be prevented through the redesign of industry such that the water discharged from a process is of as high or higher quality than that primarily used. Where pollution is unavoidable, however, it should be treated at the source, before it can escape into the environment. The ‘Living Machine’, a technology developed for water treatment by John Todd, is essentially solar powered microbe-based ecosystems that purify and recycle waste, turning it into a resource.
