ABSTRACT

Housing is one of the most critical issues facing the modern world. The vast majority of the population live in self-built shacks providing scarcely a few square metres of space. So often, the delivery of housing to the needy means sacrificing quality for quantity, providing minimal improvement over the existing shacks. These require excessive use of energy to maintain rudimentary comfort during cold and hot periods. This chapter argues that earth wall construction must be revisited, if we are to house the world’s population sustainably.
