ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION The nature of design falls between science and art, and architectural design is a complex and intuitive process. Architects use knowledge from past experiences and from their own theories to create spaces with desired experiential qualities (Suckle, 1980). Jones (1970) recognized the complexity of the design process and suggested that a designer working on a problem is engaged simultaneously in three types of activity:

● Creativity: a designer is a ‘black box’ out of which comes a mysterious creative leap.
