ABSTRACT
This chapter introduces the concept of law in the context of environmental management. It defines law and explains how laws arise. It shows, through examples, the cascading nature of environmental law, starting out at a global level but then delivered at a national or local level. It outlines what happens when laws are breached, giving examples of decided cases. It also considers key aspects of international law and the relationship between international trade and the environment.
