ABSTRACT
The chapters in this section describe how private conservation emerged in southern Africa. It expands on the literature with considerable personal knowledge because the significant conversion of private land to wildlife is remarkably under-documented. Two chapters provide a general description of private land conservation in South Africa and Namibia, a third describes the economic and institutional conditions for its emergence in Zimbabwe in the 1980s, and the fourth describes collective landholder action in southern Zimbabwe.
