Despite improvements in insulation and far more efficient boilers, total energy usefor domestic heating continues to rise. The latest statistics show that despite therise in prices, domestic gas demand in the first quarter of 2006 was 7 per cent above the level a year earlier.103 The impulses driving up energy use range from the understandable wish to heat our homes to higher temperatures in cold winters, to the rapid increase in the number of households as the UK population expands and household size falls. More households, of whatever size, add to heating demands because each one needs to be heated.
