ABSTRACT
The emergence of agri-environment (AE) schemes in The Netherlands is closely related to the rapid changes that have taken place in agriculture over the past decades. An increase in the scale of agricultural activities and increased intensification have led to a negative impact on the environment, namely nature values and the landscape. To counteract the undesired effects of agricultural development, The Netherlands government implemented the first AE schemes in the mid-1970s.
