ABSTRACT

Multifunctionality is a key issue in the sustainable development of the rural countryside. The reason for this is that the notion of multifunctionality implies the ability to manage in the long run tensions and complementarities between multiple functions associated with the three pillars of sustainable development (environmental, economic and social). Understanding the dynamic interactions between those functions is therefore required to develop appropriate decision support systems (Aumand et al, 2006; Walford, 2005).
