ABSTRACT
Timber-oriented forestry programmes typical of most academic, government and research institutions have given scant attention to non-timber forest products. The very terms used to describe the field of study encompassing forest fruits, nuts, resins, exudates, medicinal plants and fungi are illustrative: minor, secondary, special, alternative and non-timber/nonwood forest products all convey a dismissive tone.
