ABSTRACT
One of Africa’s success stories, Botswana was a haven of peace even while South Africa was still a land of apartheid. Independent since 1966, it is Africa’s longest continuous multi-party democracy and is relatively free of corruption. With a high literacy rate (over 80 per cent), it has been called the Hampstead of Africa. However, it has the second highest rate of HIV in the world after Swaziland.
