The risk inherent in calling for interculturalism in contemporary life is that we assume it is the next and inevitable stage in a long historical march of progress. This may be the case, but human history is far more episodic, characterized as much by discontinuities as by natural progressions. This chapter attempts to identify other episodes in history when intercultural engagement has been consciously espoused and practised.
