ABSTRACT

In recent years, there has been considerable debate on the merits and drawbacks of urbanization. Four issues have received the most attention: To what extent is urbanization inexorable? What is the relationship between urbanization and development? What is the future of cities, particularly the large metropolitan ones? To what extent can public policy retard or reverse urban growth and urbanization? This chapter attempts to throw some light on these questions by reviewing the Latin American and Caribbean experience.
