ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how consumer concerns about pesticides are driving change in a growing number of food chain businesses and how these market forces are leading to innovations for pesticide use reduction and integrated pest management (IPM) in Europe and North America. We describe five case studies in different cropping systems and analyse some examples of government-led programmes to reduce the risks and use of pesticides. The chapter draws together some common themes and success factors in these programmes and concludes with an assessment of current opportunities and constraints for safer and more sustainable pest management.
