ABSTRACT

The United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD) was born in 1993 out of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 – the Rio Earth Summit. The CSD exists for three principle reasons. To:

Monitor and assess implementation of Agenda 21 and to ensure effective follow-up to the Rio Earth Summit;

Provide review and policy guidance to help implement the outcomes of the WSSD; and

Act as a high-level forum within the UN to coordinate discussions on sustainable development and facilitate stakeholder dialogues.
