ABSTRACT

This chapter argues that there is a need to raise awareness about sustainability issues (specifically, eco-design) among higher education (HE) and tertiary-level students. It suggests that higher education institutions (HEIs) need to address this growing area of interest effectively in order to train the next generation of product designers to develop new and innovative products that are not detrimental to the environment. This new approach will require stakeholders from schools, HE, government and industry to work together in an interdisciplinary manner in order to achieve eco-focused educational programmes. Bradford University's School of Engineering, Design and Technology Eco-Design workshops provide a case study of what can be achieved when stakeholders work together.
