Why Social Issues are Important

In the past, forest management training emphasized technical and economic approaches, but nowadays foresters are also being asked to focus on social issues, as part of a sustainable forest management process. For example, the FSC has developed a social strategy with a set of core social values (see Box 18.1). Resolving social issues requires an understanding of the values people hold, and the participation of key groups of people in making choices between forest goods and services.
