Monitoring Social Impacts
Monitoring is an integral part of forest management and is fundamental to the continual improvement aimed for by the EMS. Just as the production and environmental effects of management need to be monitored, the forest organization’s social effects need to be followed and, where appropriate, improved. Forest managers can keep track of how well they are tackling relevant social issues, by using approaches similar to those used in environmental and operational monitoring (see Chapter 17). This is also necessary because social values change over time.
