ABSTRACT

The possibility of human beings living longer implies processes of extended organ and tissue renewal. Due to various factors, ageing exposes the organism to tissue breakdown and replacement with less functional tissue, often due to micro-scar formation. This ongoing breakdown and repair could be described as a type of wound healing that is seen in mammals where one encounters a traditional injury with wound closure and extensive scarring. Virtually the entire literature on wound healing is devoted to this aspect of the healing process.
