ABSTRACT

Despite efforts made by the Mexican government since the 1970s to expand water and sanitation services (WSS), coverage is still limited and of substandard quality considering the level of development of the country. WSS provision is also very unevenly distributed between regions and social groups. Overall, around 11 million people (almost 11 per cent of the population) have no access to water supply, while the number of people who lack access to safe water is substantially higher. However, even having access to water supply is often problematic given that the quality of the water delivered is poor. In the case of sewerage (termed sanitation in the official government reports), 15 million people lack access to any kind of service for the safe disposal of human excreta. Most of the un-served population is located in rural and peri-urban areas in the provincial states.
