ABSTRACT

There is a story of a person who, on offering help to someone sheencounters one dark night looking for something under a streetlight, is told, ‘Yes, I dropped it over there, on the other side of the road.’ Puzzled, the would-be Samaritan enquires, ‘Why then are we looking here under the streetlight?’ to which the person responds without hesitation, ‘Because it is light here, of course, and I have no hope of finding it over there in the dark.’
