ABSTRACT

In a previous chapter we discussed the scope and the use of ethnopedology. This chapter presents a number of folk soil names, documented by anthropologists and soil scientists. Unfortunately, the material is not equally complete for all ethnic groups and regions. To some extent it reflects an uneven distribution of soil knowledge among nations. Some ethnic groups developed soil classification systems, and others had only a few soil names in their language (Holman, 2005). A lot of soil terms have disappeared due to cultural erosion (Krasilnikov and Tabor, 2003). The extent of the studies around the world is not equal or uniform (Barrera-Bassols and Zinck, 2003).
