ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to demonstrate that gated communities, although often presented as a recent unsustainable trend of security-oriented urbanism, and which have spread all over the world in the last two decades, are, indeed, a classical and generic form in urban sprawl and the suburban landscape. In attempting this, we apply a theoretical approach that views the private residential community as a club economy to analyse the planning, managing practices and social interactions at the local level.
