Pedigrees and Purity

One of the most intriguing aspects of human interaction with animals is our concern with the definition of breeds and with breed (or species) purity and how this is related to the status of the animals and how we value them. Nearly all breeds created by humans and the breeding methods that have been discussed in previous chapters make use of the concepts ‘purebred’ and ‘pedigree’. These terms are often used interchangeably and to imply some form of hereditary superiority compared to animals of the same species or type that are not thus endowed.
