If you plan to live one or more years in the region, you may wish to spend some time every day studying to speak and write the local dialect. Knowing a language adds much depth to ethnobotanical research. As local people realize that you are beginning to understand their culture and dialect, they are apt to discuss their knowledge of the natural environment in greater detail. Even if you are a native speaker and a member of the community, you may have to learn to write your language in a way that linguists and others can understand.
