Ethnobotany, conservation and community development
Figure 8.1 Danson Kandeung felling a stem of Eugeissona utilis Becc. near Kinabalu Park. This species, an endemic palm of Borneo which is a source of the traditional food sago, has multiple stems which sprout from the base of the plant. Felling one trunk allows people to harvest the starchy pith, but does not kill the palm. Reconciliation between protection and utilization of biological organisms is a key element of conservation and developmem projects.
