ABSTRACT

The stories in this section take place in countries orregions recovering from war where the culture ofpeace is no longer a distant dream; it is an imminent reality. Un-armed uniformed peacekeepers-the soldiers with the blue hats-have replaced peacemakers, or armed peace enforcers. All are donated by UN member-states; the UN has no standing army. Their work is dangerous; since 1948, 1,650 military and civilian peacekeepers have been killed. It is no wonder that there is reluctance on the part of UN memberstates to donate their forces.
