ABSTRACT
In many cases, information associated with genetic resources can be quite valuable. Two types of situation need to be distinguished. First is the situation where access is sought to particular information about genetic resources – such as the knowledge of traditional healers about the medicinal properties of forest plants. Second is the situation where valuable knowledge is subsequently derived, either directly from genetic resources or from knowledge about genetic resources on the part of local and indigenous communities.
