ABSTRACT
The Italian electricity sector is one of the largest in Europe. Traditionally it has been run by a vertically integrated state-owned utility, ENEL Spa. Emissions are relatively high, the capital stock is old and the major fuel is oil. However, the liberalization process, set in motion by the European liberalization directive, will have major repercussions in the sector.
