chapter  9
Nature, Lanscapes, Lives
Pages 22

The physical isolation of protected areas and the fragmentation of nature in the countryside have been discussed in Chapter Eight, as have some of the ways in which that fragmentation can be tackled. However, protected areas are very often not only isolated physically, they are also isolated institutionally, cut off from local people and local economic interests. If conservation is to be successful, we need to re-integrate conservation into the local economy. Just as we need to reach out beyond the confines of protected areas into the whole landscape, we need to build links between protected areas and the needs and economic lives of the communities around them.
