ABSTRACT
The turn of the millennium has seen two dramatic new trends in civil society. Both relate to globalization and the parallel phenomenon of what some call the “rise of the network society” (Castells 1996). The first is the emergence of an increasingly popular—and sometimes disruptive—anti-globalization protest movement. The second is the birth of advocacy groups that largely inhabit Internet space and mobilize through websites rather than conventional pressure-group tactics.
