As the previous chapters have shown, future generations’ economic prosperity will be undermined if the degradation of ecosystems continues, so efforts to reduce a range of environmental pressures are not only good for the environment, but good for the world’s economies. Reducing environmental pressures will be particularly challenging for developing countries for a number of reasons outlined in this chapter. Poverty is both a major cause and effect of global environmental problems.
