ABSTRACT
Independently from the nature of the water body or its geographical setting, and whatever the legal regime to which it is subject, the development and the sharing of knowledge constitute:
a basis for the understanding of the water body in question and for establishing cause–effect relationships in its management;
an essential element to build confidence and enhance trust among the stakeholders concerned at the technical level;
a sound and scientific basis for joint decision making at the political level.
