Roles of Producers in Sustainable Food Provision
Farmers nowadays find themselves operating in a globalizing world of food and are faced with multiple challenges, not only to secure the future of their farms, their livelihoods and the local community, but also to contribute to more sustainable food provision. Farmers must respond to these challenges while playing their role as part of large supply chains dominated by corporate traders, processors and retailers. In reacting to such pressures and demands, farmers develop different strategies. To reduce environmental impacts, some focus on using high-tech methods, while others try to embed their production practices in local communities and local eco-systems. For this chapter, we selected some of the producer strategies that figure prominently in scientific and public debates on the future of farming and food, to illustrate some of the issues that involve globalization and sustainability.
