The early success of the FFS approach to extension has helped lay the foundation for large-scale roll-out in rural Kenya by the KTDA extension service. It is important that key elements of the processes involved are not lost during roll-out, including
† the powerful group dynamic of each FFS (a class size of 30 worked well); and
† the ‘hands-on’ approach to farmer-led trials on the farmer’s own crops, which is also vital for ensuring a deep understanding and commitment to improvement.
