Module 5: Main Ideas

Key Themes Saba Mahmood’s Politics of Piety: The Islamic Revival and the Feminist Subject is a book about women’s involvement in the Islamic revival taking place in Egypt and across the Arab world. The Islamic revival loosely refers to the development since the 1970s of a “back to basics” form of Islam and takes different forms around the Islamic world. While these revivals are all motivated by a wish to make Muslim values central to daily life, they can range from peacefully persuading people to be more pious to, at the other extreme, Islamist* campaigns aiming to establish Islamic states under Sharia law* that resort to violence or terror.
