ABSTRACT

John P. Kotter's intention with Leading Change was to expand on the ideas presented in his earlier article of the same name, and in this he was successful. Leading Change has not only gained acclaim and recognition in the field of business and management, but has also been used by academics and practitioners in other social science disciplines. Studies in health services research have used Kotter's framework to reform the state-level health services in the United Kingdom. Kotter describes a general process of change, which should be applicable to almost all change situations. Leading Change is based on examples from the private sector and corporate world, the model has been widely used to explain change and public service reform across various social sectors such as health services and education. Change is also no longer only an American or North American phenomenon; as business becomes global, organizations must predict and respond to change around the world and manage it in tandem.
