ABSTRACT

According to Douglas McGregor, a management style that treats employees as lazy and in need of strict control does not reflect human behavior and motivation accurately. He argues that those who study management should draw more on research from the field of social sciences. He emphasizes that managers themselves should be aware of advancements in knowledge about human behavior. McGregor believed that employees naturally want to do good work. This motivation comes from taking pride in their accomplishments and satisfying their responsibilities. Based on research in the social sciences that has highlighted the human need for growth and learning, McGregor called for the development of a new management theory in which managers see their employees as human resources. He expressed and defended his views so successfully that he soon became regarded as one of the most significant contributors to the field of organizational development.
