ABSTRACT

Christopher Hill’s The World Turned Upside Down: Radical Ideas During the English Revolution is without doubt a classic history of the English Revolution. It is also a prominent example of the values of Marxist history. The World Turned Upside Down is likely to continue to be important for historians of the English Revolution, and they still engage with the text in new and revealing ways today. The World Turned Upside Down has also become an important piece of history in its own right. Although The World Turned Upside Down has been expanded, critiqued, and complicated by the studies that have followed it, it remains a text that holds a powerful influence over its field. The World Turned Upside Down is an important text in the study of the English Revolution, and of the subject of radical thought more broadly.
