ABSTRACT

Homi K. Bhabha's The Location of Culture remains enduringly influential. In part this is because Bhabha himself remains conspicuous both within and beyond his discipline. Students coming to Bhabha's thought for the first time, as well as those more familiar with his work who wish to return to the source, will often look to The Location of Culture. As a consequence, The Location of Culture has proved remarkably fertile territory for generating new applications of critical theory, particularly in other disciplines, and it is likely this will continue. The ideas put forward in The Location of Culture have been influential both within and beyond postcolonial thought. Bhabha's focus on discourse and his insistence on the meticulous reading and cross-reading of the textual aspects and qualities of culture. The adaptability and usefulness of Bhabha's ideas beyond postcolonialism may well turn out to be The Location of Culture's enduring legacy.
