ABSTRACT

Potential Hamid Dabashi’s Theology of Discontent will surely continue to be a relevant text. It offers a unique insight into the 1978-9 Iranian Revolution* and the emergence of an Islamic Republic* built on a radical, spiritual, revolutionary, and aggressively anti-Western* ideology. Dabashi’s second edition in 2006 placed Iran in the context of the world post-9/11,* with the waging of the War on Terror* and the US-led invasions of Afghanistan (2001)* and Iraq (2003).*

The text will be useful for scholars, journalists, diplomats, and policy makers, especially those who deal with political Islam,* Shi’ism,* the overtly patriotic ideology of nationalism,* and specific topics such as US-Iran relations, Iranian foreign policy, nuclear diplomacy (in light of Iran’s nuclear program*), and revolutions.
