John Stuart Mill was a leading figure in the English intellectual life of the mid-nineteenth century and On Liberty was not the only one of his books to have an impact on philosophical discussion among politicians and scholars. On Liberty is a classic text for all students of politics, moral philosophy, and social theory. On Liberty is a classic text for all students of politics, moral philosophy, and social theory. The ideas Mill shares in On Liberty are central to the political and economic values of liberal democracy. Mill’s theories can be employed by many political camps; the theory of individualism alone is so expansive that it can be incorporated in both right-wing libertarian politics and to progressive welfare policy. Mill’s later work also deserves attention. Utilitarianism and The Subjection of Women continue the themes of On Liberty. Utilitarianism and On Liberty share certain key concerns; both rely on the utilitarian philosophy Mill set out in A System Of Logic.
