ABSTRACT

To a certain extent, it is possible to trace the influence of Ways of Seeing in the subsequent evolution of art history. Ways of Seeing had a deep impact on several major intellectual figures, including recent thinkers, such as Adrian Barlow and Amelia Jones. John Berger's Ways of Seeing has inspired academics and scholars from a wide range of disciplines. Ways of Seeing is central to the intellectual world of many academics who have been influenced by Berger's ideas, and have subsequently developed them or applied them to other disciplines. The degree to which these scholars have remained true to Berger's original text has varied greatly. His ideas have influenced scholars on subjects such as anthropology, history, film, and photography, impacting on media criticism and even led to the creation of a new field, visual culture. It is difficult, however, to identify individual scholars that can be considered devoted followers of Berger's ideas in Ways of Seeing.
