ABSTRACT

James March created an influential Garbage Can Model of interpreting how organizations make decisions, which he worked on with Johan Olsen and Michael Cohen. March's study "Exploration and Exploitation in Organizational Learning" first and foremost provides readers with a strong and valuable framework to compare two very different options that are open to businesses and other organizations that compete with each other. According to March, well-socialized and trained workers have less variability in skill from worker to worker, which makes for a more reliable workforce. March received many accolades for "Exploration and Exploitation in Organizational Learning", including an award for excellence in teaching at Stanford in 1995, a Norwegian knighthood the same year, and the Order of the Lion, a Finnish state honor, in 1999. He was elected to the American Philosophical Society in 2001, and the American Political Science Association also gave him its Aaron Wildavsky Enduring Contribution Award in 2004.
