ABSTRACT

It is highly likely that in the future the arguments raised by Amartya Sen in Inequality Reexamined will remain relevant in many areas of social change and progress. Sen's arguments are, in fact, central to fundamental issues concerning the flourishing of humanity and society. The Capability Approach isn't new to development policy, but with the increased focus on the importance of human agency and inequality, these two fundamental concepts are likely to gain more prominence in mainstream development policy and practice. This would contribute to a shift away from social arrangements based on profit and accumulation to ones that place greater value on human flourishing and equality. It would also encourage policy makers to make people central to decisions where agency is central to freedom and equality. Continuing theoretical and empirical research is needed to work through challenges to the Capability Approach and help its theoretical and practical application.
